Here There Be Witches!
Bell, Book, and Candle
(1958)
It's the Xmas season, and book
editor James Stewart learns something about his downstairs neighbor Kim
Novak - she's a witch! In fact, New York is full of them! Not your typical
holiday movie or romantic comedy, this film was one of the inspirations
for the "Bewitched" television series. Jack Lemmon, Elsa Lanchester, Ernie
Kovacks, and Hermione Gingold co-star. (Oh, and Pyewacket the cat, too.)

The Blair Witch Project
(1999)
Spooky and innovative, this
pseudo-documentary (or is it?) purports to be the footage shot by three
students making a movie about the legendary Blair Witch in the woods around
Burkittsville, Maryland, before they disappeared, becoming the Blair Witch's
latest victims. Copied but never equaled. Shhh! Is there someone out there?
Starring Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, Michael C. Williams.

witchcraft to protect him against the curses and demons sent against him
by his colleagues. He forces her to destroy all her protective charms,
and then all Hell breaks loose. Watch for the climatic sequence as the
Professor is cornered in his classroom by the creature sent to destroy
him! Janet Blair co-stars.

The Conqueror Worm (1968)
a.k.a Witch-Finder General
. Graphic movie about Matthew Hopkins, the self-appointed "Witch-Finder
General" who terrorized the countryside during the English Civil War, travelling
from town to town and promising to rid them of their witches, for a fee,
of course. One of Vincent Price's last "Edgar Allan Poe" movies, this should
be a required history lesson on the Religious Right. Ian Ogilvy co-stars.

The Craft (1996)
More Dark Wicca than Satanic
witchery, this movie is a fun exercise in the ultimate "girl power." Return
to Oz's Fairuza Balk plays the evil Nancy, with Robin Tunney, Neve
Campbell, and Rachel True filling out the coven. Skeet Ulrich plays the
hunky dumb jock turned victim of witchery. Great soundtrack and opening
titles!

Cry of the Banshee (1970)
Last of the Edgar Allen Poe
movies starring Vincent Price, this Elzabethan era story has Price as the
head of an aristocratic family being hunted by a lycanthropic being dispatched
as vengeance by the high priestess of a witch coven killed by Price's soldiers.
One of the first witch movies to make use of the term "Old Religion." Lots
of nudity, too, if you're into that sort of thing.

H. Phillip Lovecraft in a parallel 1950s universe where everybody uses
magick. After a Hollywood producer is found murdered through witchcraft,
